• D.I.C.E. 2014

On Saturday the first wave of guests for D.I.C.E. (Dublin International Comic Expo) – 27 – 28 September, 2014 in Dundrum, Co. Dublin – were announced. I’m delighted to be part of the event, and among such great company. And that’s a terrific poster designed by Irish artist Phil Barrett who is also on the guest list.

  • MCM Ireland reviewed

My review of MCM Ireland Comic Con went up on the Forbidden Planet International blog today, along with some pictures I took at the event. You can see all my photos from the con on my Flickr stream, including photos of many of the Irish comic book creators who were at the event. By the way, have I mentioned that I have a Tumblr? I started it three years ago, but after a time I didn’t have the ability to maintain it along with my other various social media. Recently, I’ve gone back to updating it. It’s strictly focused on comics and art, so if that’s to your tastes you…

  • MCM Ireland

I was back on the RTÉ Radio 1 art’s show Arena last night, this time talking about the forthcoming MCM Ireland Comic Con, which is happening in Dublin this weekend for the first time. You can listen to my contribution online now: I come in around the 30 minute mark. I suspect MCM is going to be a popular event, especially as they have carpeted Dublin with posters, so everyone in the capital knows it’s going on. I’ll be there meeting friends and colleagues at the Comics Village, and generally checking out the event. The arrival of the MCM ‘brand’ into Ireland heralds that traditionally geeky interests are now mainstream.…

  • Holiday Laydeez

The third meeting of Laydeez do Comics – Dublin, will take place from 2.30pm – 5pm on Saturday, 30 November, 2013 in the 3rd floor bar of the Odessa Club, 13 Dame Court, Dublin 2 (not the rooftop bar on this occasion). Since we’re on the cusp of the holiday season we’re offering a bumper meeting, and this time it’s taking place during the day at the weekend to facilitate as many people as possible who want to travel to the meeting. Our guests will be Leeann Hamilton, Michael Carroll, and Gareth Gowran & Sadhbh Lawlor. In the spirit of gift-giving we’re also going to have a comic swap at the meeting: please bring along a comic…

  • Octocon 2013 schedule

It’s that time of the year again, which means I’ll be in The Camden Court Hotel in Dublin this weekend (12-13 October) attending one of my favourite conventions: Octocon. There are two terrific guests of honour that I’m very excited about meeting: comic book writer Gail Simone, and author Richard K Morgan. Both of them have created work I both enjoy and admire, so it will be a privilege to hear them talk about their interests. Here’s my schedule: Saturday 13:00 – Masterclass in Contemporary Fantasy (Pavilion) with Peadar Ó Guilín and Liz Bourke 15:00 – I Don’t Believe It, But It’s True (Abbey) with Ruth Frances Long, Leann Hamilton,…

  • Laydeez do Comics Two

Lynda Rucker and I can finally release the details of our second Laydeez do Comics – Dublin event, which we’ve been working on since the success of the first meeting in May. It will be happening from 7pm – 9.30pm on Wednesday, 11 September, 2013 in the Rooftop Bar, 3rd floor, of the Odessa Club, 13 Dame Court, Dublin 2. Our guests for this meeting are: Sarah Bracken, Paddy Lynch, and Arja Kajermo – check out their bios on the web site, as they represent a wide range of experience in the independent comic book/cartoon/zine scene. We’re looking forward to the night already!

  • Little Room of Comics

There’s a festival kicking off today in the capital city called 10 Days in Dublin, which is “a multidisciplinary, open-format, arts festival. This means that the festival includes all types of art or performance: music, comedy, theatre, film, painting, sculpture.” As part of the festival there is an event going on called the ‘Little Room of Comics‘. This will be an exhibition and shop that celebrates home-grown Irish comic book art. “From original characters to crazy caricatures, from superheroes to satire and from the everyday to the bizarre we’ve got it all covered.” They’re also holding comic jams on the 6th, 10th and 12th of July. It’s taking place above…

  • ArcadeCon & Arena

I’m very much looking forward to this weekend in Dublin, where I’ll be one of the special guests at ArcadeCon. It’s a multi-media convention so there’s a variety of geeky interests for the fans: cosplay workshops, anime, comic book discussions, pop culture exegesis, music, as well as interviews with actors and actresses from genre TV and film. The FAQ and programme of events is online, and you can even download an Android app with all the details you’ll need for your weekend of fun and entertainment. There are a couple of events starting on Thursday, but the convention kicks off properly on Friday afternoon. I’ve also been asked to appear…

  • Independents Day 2013

On Sunday Lynda Rucker and I visited the Dublin Food Co-Op, which was temporary home to Independents Day 2013. We were there to get a sense of the comic book scene that’s bubbling up and often not well reported, and to do a bit of outreach for Laydeez do Comics – Dublin (more news about our September meeting coming soon!). I always have a soft spot for Co-Ops, especially in these tough economic times, so I loved this place. There was a happy punk vibe going on, with a big variety of tables and dealers, along with a café serving delicious, inexpensive food, and live music later on. There were…

  • dogs and shoes

When I was in Dublin this week I was fortunate to stay with Lynda Rucker, and her housemates Liz and Charlotte. Liz has a fabulous dog called Coco who is a sweetheart. As I’ve mentioned before my dog Minnie is not one for PDAs, but Coco is a total extrovert with her affection. I couldn’t resist taking a snap of her with my mobile phone. Minnie gave me a glad welcome when I arrived home, and a proper sniffing. I wonder if she was thinking ‘The cheek of her! Spending time with another mutt.’ I snuck into a few shops in Dublin, and spotted this incredible Lady Gaga-esque pair of…
