WOMEN IN COMICS

I created this page after a blog post I wrote in March 2011 called women in comics in uk/ireland – redux.

At the time I recognised that there were still people asking the question “Where are the women working in comics in the UK and Ireland?“, and if you were unable to point them to a single resource with all the names listed, the assumption was that women weren’t active in the industry in significant numbers.

So I established a list that includes women writers and artists (colourists, inkers, pencilers, etc.) who work in sequential storytelling in the UK and Ireland.

From March 2013 I expanded this list to include women working in the industry in Europe. From January 2016 I expanded it beyond Europe to aid the recognition of women’s contribution to comics / bande dessinées in more countries. I’m mostly concentrating on countries outside of the big, networked centres like USA/Canada/Japan, and especially those that are non English-speaking.

If you want to be added to the list, please contact me with your name, web site address, and publication you have appeared in. A publication is necessary to appear on the list, and web comics are acceptable.

I list women by country of residence – unless they ask to be listed in the country of their birth.

This is a continual work in progress. Please be patient as updates may occur irregularly if I’m busy.

There is a private Women in Comics, Europe group for networking on Facebook for any woman who is working in the industry.

For a comprehensive overview of the history of women who have worked in the comic book industry in the UK read The Inking Woman, edited by Nicola Streeten and Cath Tate, published by Myriad. Read Trina Robbin’s book Pretty in Ink, published by Fantagraphics, which examines North American Women Cartoonists from 1896-2013. Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime by Deborah Elizabeth Whaley for the University of Washington Press is also a highly informative text.
