Octocon 2022

After several years of attending conventions online it’s a pleasure to be participating in person again, and that goes double for Octocon 2022, the Irish National Science Fiction Convention, which I’ve been attending (and used to help run) for decades. It has a very dear place in my heart.

This year Octocon is a hybrid convention taking place from 15-16 October 2022 in Croke Park Convention Centre, Dublin.

There is a terrific line-up of Guests of Honour and Guests, and as always it’s a honour to be included.

Here’s my schedule:

Saturday, 15 October
11:30am in the Davin room
Unreliable Narrators and Other Tricks
Eve Golden-Woods, Maura McHugh, Jonny Nexus, Sarah Rees Brennan (moderator) and Mary Watson
Do your characters constantly contradict themselves, exaggerate situations, or conceal important details? If so, you may have one or more unreliable narrators! Our panel looks at how multiple viewpoints, restricted perspectives and outright lies can be used to play with the audience’s perceptions of what’s really going on in a story whether on the page or the screen.

Sunday, 16 October
11:30am in the Davin room
Irish Horror Films
James Brophy (moderator), Ygraine Hackett-Cantabrana, Maura McHugh, Jon O’Sullivan, Mary Watson
Ireland’s myths and legends are crawling out of the screen to make bank at the box office. Horror was already a reliably profitable end of the film industry but now the strong variation of predicaments provided by wronging some local beastie of Irish folklore has laid the ground for the new boom in contemporary Irish horror films.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
