Witchfinder 3 out today
Another month, another Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland issue from Dark Horse Comics is on the shelves (both physical and virtual). Here’s the blub: Local officials present a façade of normalcy, but the Witchfinder knows there’s something wrong with the denizens of Unland, and he’s starting to uncover what that has to do with the dying founder of the town and the elixir he invented that put the town on the map … This comic is part of a five-issue Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder story, which I have co-written with Kim Newman, with art by Tyler Crook, coloured by Dave Stewart, covers by Julian Totino Tedesco, lettered by Clem Robins, and edited by Scott Allie. All…

Background and Review
Tomorrow is publication day for issue 1 of Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland, and it seems almost unreal. Publishing can be a strange business: you work on a project for a long time and well ahead of its release into the world, and occasionally it feels like a Sisyphean task. Suddenly, it feels like someone is collapsing a telescope and publication day zooms in! For those of you who are unfamiliar with Sir Edward Grey, the protagonist of the Witchfinder series, here’s his entry in the Hellboy Wiki. For the Mignolaverse scholars among you, check out the incredibly detailed and comprehensive Hell Notes column that Mark Tweedale recently dedicated to…

witchfinder chat on pop culture hound
Over on Pop Culture Hound, Kim and I are on the latest podcast, episode 81, hosted by Chris Thompson. The 50-minute episode continues on the theme of celebrating Hellboy, so featured on this podcast are Dark Horse Comics Publisher Mike Richardson, Mouse Guard‘s David Petersen, and editor Scott Allie, before Kim and I turn up to talk about working on Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland. It’s good listening for those of you who appreciate the Mignolaverse and are interested in some background information on the comics. Perhaps do some ironing and have this on the background! (Personally, I dislike ironing and put it off until it hits crisis point, so…

my favourite Hellboy comic(s)
Tomorrow is officially Hellboy Day, when comic book retailers around the world will be celebrating 20 years of Red’s arrival on the comic book scene for the first time. There have been a variety of promotions on various web sites in the lead-up to this event, and today Multiversity Comics has published a piece called Creators Share Their Favorite Hellboy Stories After 20 Years. It includes my picks – and I say plural because it was pretty impossible to narrow it down to one, even though I looked exclusively at Hellboy titles, and didn’t include any of the B.P.R.D., Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, or Witchfinder stories… One of the great…

pancakes and beer
Last night I raised a glass of rosé in celebration of the release of the news that Kim and I are writing a Witchfinder comic book together. When I saluted Hellboy with it he recoiled like he’d been offered the throne of England. ‘Son of a…!” he growled, and unholstered the Good Samaritan. To prevent carnage I offered him pancakes, and later beer, and we made up. So much so that he was willing to give our team a ringing endorsement! Thanks to everyone who has left comments on my Facebook page and Twitter about the news – it’s been great to receive such a positive reaction. Hopefully you’ll enjoy…
