    warren ellis in Galway

Last night at the National University of Galway the Literary and Debating Society and the Comic Book Society showcased a public interview with legendary British comic book writer Warren Ellis. When I arrived for the event I met Galway cartoonist/caricaturist Allan Cavanagh and writer/editor Stan Carey, and we all sat together. This turned out to be a dogsend because we discovered the Lit and Deb Soc were going to have an hour of their usual debates before the event. Thus, the three of us were subjected to two discussions: “That the House Welcomes the Queen of England to Ireland with Open Arms” and “That the House Endorses Gender Quotas in…

    the boy in the bubble

I captured this moment on Grafton Street in Dublin while I was wandering about taking a break from P-Con. As usual P-Con was a laid-back, enjoyable event, with plenty of good conversation accompanied by the occasional drink. I had a good time on all of my panels – thanks to the smart, funny panellists speaking with me and the interaction from the audience. Next year the convention will be under new management and will be moving to a new location. I wish the committee the best of luck. Joint Guest of Honours of Pcon IX will be Robert Rankin and Bryan Talbot, and the convention will be taking place from…

not a weekend for the ladies

Some of my regular readers might remember my tangle with SFX magazine last year over its one-off special horror edition, which barely mentioned the existence of women in its pages, and its poor response. Things must have changed, eh? One year on the magazine just ran its multi-media conference, the Weekender 2, an event promising to offer ‘the ultimate sci-fi experience, packed with activities for fans’. I noticed a comment on Facebook today from one of the guests who wondered about the dearth of female guests. I looked at the list: 37 guests, only 4 of them are women. However, I spotted something else. Two of the female guests are…

    WexWorlds 2010

From the 26th – 28th November I’ll be a guest at WexWorlds, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Fiction Festival in Wexford, Ireland. A .pdf of the programme is available for download, and it looks like it’s going to be a weekend packed with lots of fun events – WexWorlds is primarily focused on young people, but there will be plenty for older people to enjoy as well. It’s ideal for households of adults and children who love science fiction and fantasy literature, television and cinema. I’ll be involved in the following events: Whites Hotel: Saturday 13.00-13.50 Recommendations of the best Sci-Fi and Fantasy books of 2010 I’ll be moderating the…
