love me
A flagrant show, but oh how beautiful…

relax
I spotted this mosaic mirror in the Galway market yesterday, hanging on the railings that surround St. Nicholas’ Church. I appreciate the irony that you can see a shattered reflection of me in the word, because I’m not good at truly relaxing. Perhaps I should try to inhabit the word better.

old magic persists
Tree, water and moon at dusk. It’s still beautiful, despite the rows of houses stacked upon each other. Even in the urban environment the old magic persists.

november woods, filtered
I took this photograph in the woods this evening, of the lowering sun filtered through trees. Then I filtered the photo and added a frame that lent it an older look. As the image changed on my computer screen I analysed the feelings it evoked, and eventually it synched with an emotional response I wanted to express. It reminds me how we change events after we experience them: we add in more hue and contrast or bump up the warmth. Our memories are refined in the re-telling. Details are zoomed upon and unsightly ugliness cropped out. Finally, we create the perfect capsule moment. This is what we show to others.…

terminator games
I took this picture at the arcade in Brighton Pier last month when I was attending the British FantasyCon. All those robotic red eyes daring you to chance your money and skill against their programmed reflexes. How can you resist?

tasty Wednesday
It’s been a pretty productive day, but I’ve work yet to do. So a rare treat from Sweetie Pies in Galway, along with a doppio espresso to cut through the sugar and fuel the rest of my evening. Yum.

intimacy
Winter is upon us, but here is an image of a golden autumn evening in one of my favourite places to walk the dog: Coole Park.

Octocon 2011
One of my favourite Irish conventions of the calendar has rolled around again: Octocon. It’s taking place in the Cameden Court Hotel in Dublin, and features Guest of Honour John Higgins as well as a plethora of guests (including me). Here’s my schedule for the weekend: Saturday 12:00 Essentials of Horor Fiction 15:00 “Women in Sci-Fi/fantasy/comics panels” – Are they still needed? 17:00 Atomic Diner – Are Irish comics viable? 18:00 If at first you don’t succeed Sunday 11:00 What fresh hell is this? 12:00 Reading 14:00 Golden Blasters 17:00 Awards Ceremony I’m very much looking forward to the Golden Blasters Awards – which is the screening of five short…

but women don’t want to write superhero comics…
I attended the British Fantasy Society‘s annual conference, FantasyCon, in Brighton at the beginning of the month. The weather was glorious and everyone was in good form. Being able to eat outside every evening, like I was holidaying in Spain or Italy, added to my enjoyment of the event. Brighton is a cool city, and it’s a wonderful location for an convention like this (roll on World Fantasy Con in Brighton in 2013 I say!). The event ended on a bit of sour note, alas, due to a controversy over the administration of the BFS Awards at the end of the conference. The BFS has since posted an official statement…

back to Brighton
I’m on my way to Brighton, England today to attend the British Fantasy Society’s annual conference, Fantasycon. It’s my first time attending a British Fantasycon, but the guests, the programme and the location made it too tempting to resist this year. I was in Brighton last year for the World Horror Convention, and it’s a wonderful place to visit. And it appears I’ve inadvertently booked myself a sun holiday as the sea-side town is experiencing summer weather at the moment. I wonder will I be able to escape the gravity well of the conference events and people in order to enjoy this rare bout of sunshine?
