    Bone Mother for Halloween

You can now watch the full short stop-motion animation of Bone Mother, created by Dale Hayward & Sylvie Trouvé and based on my short story, courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada. But be quick, there’s no guarantee she’ll remain online after Halloween…

    Hammered Podcast

I’ll be taking part in an on-going podcast called Hammered, dedicated to examining the more ghoulish output of the British Hammer Film Productions studio. Starting with The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) and ending (maybe) with To the Devil a Daughter (1976), the discussions will be hosted by J G Byrne and aided by a rotating guest list. Each episode will work through one film from the studio’s horror releases. The original music for the podcast is created by David Blake. The first batch of films I’ll be chatting about with John are: The Quatermass Xperiment (1955), The Mummy (1959), The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960), The Curse of the Mummy’s…

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me midnight movie monograph

I’m happy to reveal that I’ve written a Midnight Movie Monograph for Electric Dreamhouse Press, an imprint of PS Publishing, a series curated by editor Neil Snowdon with a focus on critical reactions to cult films. I’ll be looking at the iconic film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With me, written by David Lynch and Robert Engels, and directed by David Lynch. The book is now available to pre-order and will be published in June. The cover art is also by Neil Snowdon. The release of the book is well timed since the first four episodes of the new season of the TV series Twin Peaks – written by David Lynch…

    Bugs at 75

I learned from a Variety article by Tim Gray that Bugs Bunny is 75 today. He first appeared in ‘The Wild Hare’, directed by Tex Avery, on 27 July, 1940. https://dailymotion.com/video/x20s0p3 When I was a kid I watched a lot of vintage cartoons, but Bugs Bunny was by far my favourite. I loved his sense of humour, and the madcap ways he managed to evade capture (mostly). Bug got out his scrapes through his imagination and smarts, which is what appealed to me most. This is a photo of a plastic model of Bugs I’ve owned since I was a kid, which I took this afternoon. He’s getting extra carrots,…

    Bone Mother teaser trailer

I’ve mentioned that my short story ‘Bone Mother’ is being adapted into a stop-motion animated short film by See Creature animation company in Canada. It’s a long process and it won’t be complete until 2016, but I was thrilled to see them release a tiny teaser trailer for the short film. A short day with good news

In May this year I announced that my short story ‘Bone Mother’ had been optioned by the National Film Board of Canada’s Animation Studio with the view to make a short stop-motion animated film, adapted and directed by Sylvie Trouvé and Dale Hayward (via their animation company See Creature), and produced for the NFB by Jelena Popovic. Everyone knows that an option doesn’t necessarily mean that the short film will get made, but I had hope considering the people involved. So I was delighted when I discovered that ‘Bone Mother’ has been green-lit, and the production is expected to finish in early 2016. Seven minutes of stop-motion, and over a year…

    Bone Mother optioned

I’m delighted to announce that my short story ‘Bone Mother’ has been optioned by the National Film Board of Canada’s Animation Studio with the view to make a short stop-motion animated film, which will be adapted and directed by Sylvie Trouvé and Dale Hayward, and produced for the NFB by Jelena Popovic. I’m going to cut and paste what I wrote back in 2009 when ‘Bone Mother’ was podcast on Pseudopod. I wrote the first draft at Clarion West in 2006, and it was a pivotal story in my progress during the six-week workshop. I’d written a mediocre story the week before, and I felt extreme pressure (from myself) to produce…
