tailoring

I’m 3K into a fantasy short story, and it’s good fun so far. It’s looking like it might be 7/8K in total. Maybe 9K. Hopefully in subsequent drafts I’ll be able to trim it back.

Generally, I’m not fond of writing stories above 5K because the markets to which you can submit decrease dramatically. Plus, from a practical point of view, I prefer to read shorter stories.

Yet, market considerations and personal preferences aside, some stories demand a longer length. I know how a badly fitted jacket looks – all that extra space at the wrists, and the stiffness around the shoulders. It doesn’t work, and it’s restricting.

Better to have a snug, but comfortable fit.

I hope to complete the story by the end of the week.
