Mon, 16 January 2012 Highland fling
Since starting to write comics I’ve been fortunate to meet many new people and come to call them friends. Two such gems are Vicky Stonebridge and Richmond Clements, who run Hi-Ex: the Highlands International Comic Expo.
Not only are they warm and generous people they are also talented creators in the comic book industry, and run [...]
Wed, 09 November 2011 easter egg window
I took this picture while I was in Stockholm, Sweden over Easter.
I’m always interested in the differences in detail from country to country. This is an image I could not have shot in Ireland. We don’t have that style of window combined with that wrought iron, and I’ve never seen an Easter decoration like that [...]
Thu, 03 November 2011 terminator games
I took this picture at the arcade in Brighton Pier last month when I was attending the British FantasyCon.
All those robotic red eyes daring you to chance your money and skill against their programmed reflexes.
How can you resist?
Thu, 13 October 2011 Octocon 2011
One of my favourite Irish conventions of the calendar has rolled around again: Octocon.
It’s taking place in the Cameden Court Hotel in Dublin, and features Guest of Honour John Higgins as well as a plethora of guests (including me).
Here’s my schedule for the weekend:
Saturday
12:00 Essentials of Horor Fiction
15:00 “Women in Sci-Fi/fantasy/comics panels” [...]
Fri, 30 September 2011 back to Brighton
I’m on my way to Brighton, England today to attend the British Fantasy Society’s annual conference, Fantasycon.
It’s my first time attending a British Fantasycon, but the guests, the programme and the location made it too tempting to resist this year. I was in Brighton last year for the World Horror Convention, and it’s a wonderful [...]
Wed, 10 August 2011 look up
This is a picture of the Millennium Bridge in London during a recent trip, from the vantage point of a tour cruise on the River Thames. I visit London often, but rarely do the touristy stuff. This time I was showing relatives around who wanted the highlights, and as a result I saw more of [...]
Tue, 12 July 2011 wear some flowers in your hair
This striking window display is from Brown Thomas in Dublin yesterday. I stopped to snap it as I swayed down Grafton Street after an enjoyable evening with a visiting friend.
We’d just attended the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl, which combined culture, history and theatrical renactments with stops in landmark pubs. Clear and temperate weather made the [...]
Thu, 30 June 2011 waiting in Madrid
Many people were surprised when I told them during my trip to Mallorca this February that I had never been to Spain before. Spain has always been a popular holiday destination for Irish people.
But, there were no foreign holidays while I was growing up, apart from the rare trip to America. My family always [...]
Fri, 24 June 2011 never enough time
This was taken on the metro in Stockholm, Sweden when I visited in April. It was night-time and we were heading back from the pub.
This summarises for me the rather hectic pace of our life these days. We are always rushing somewhere, our minds on the clock, agendas and errands.
It’s hard to leave that behind [...]
Thu, 23 June 2011 take a seat
This is another image from my February trip to Mallorca. I snapped this in a tiny pebble beach in Santa Ponsa at dusk.
Someone had set a plastic chair on the beach and left it there. Probably one of the locals or off-season residents, who would climb down the short set of wooden steps to [...]
