Tue, 17 June 2014 Background and Review

Tomorrow is publication day for issue 1 of Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland, and it seems almost unreal.
Publishing can be a strange business: you work on a project for a long time and well ahead of its release into the world, and occasionally it feels like a Sisyphean task.
Suddenly, it feels like someone is [...]

Mon, 16 June 2014 Preview of Unland 1

The first three pages of issue 1 of Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland have been posted online, and on the Tumblr of our artist Tyler Crook (follow him!).
What’s cool is that along with the finished coloured/lettered pages, you can also see the original black and white inks beside for comparison. I’m replicating them below.
Not only [...]

Sun, 01 June 2014 Solstice signing at Sub-City Comics

Thanks to Rob Curley at Sub-City Comics in Dublin, and the fabulous PR crew at Dark Horse Comics, I’ll be doing a signing of issue 1 of Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland at Sub-City Comics at its new location at 62 Dame Street, Dublin, Ireland 2, on Saturday, 21 June from noon – 4pm.

I’m looking [...]

Fri, 18 April 2014 Witchfinder 2 cover

Yesterday I was being all enthusiastic for Julian Totino Tedesco’s cover artwork for Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland issue 1 on my blog, and late that evening Comic Book Resources announced the July solicit information and covers for Dark Horse Comics.
Including Julian’s cover for issue two of Witchfinder. It’s one of my favourites!

Oh yes, dark, [...]

Thu, 17 April 2014 art progression on Witchfinder 1 cover

Most of you are aware that I’m co-writing the next Witchfinder mini-series with Kim Newman, and that the amazing Tyler Crook is providing the art, with colours by the multiple award-winning Dave Stewart.
I’ve now seen all the art for issues 1 and 2 and it’s terrific. I can’t wait until other people see it too.
On [...]

Over on Pop Culture Hound, Kim and I are on the latest podcast, episode 81, hosted by Chris Thompson.
The 50-minute episode continues on the theme of celebrating Hellboy, so featured on this podcast are Dark Horse Comics Publisher Mike Richardson, Mouse Guard‘s David Petersen, and editor Scott Allie, before Kim and I turn up to [...]

Sat, 22 March 2014 Happy Hellboy Day!

It’s Hellboy Day around the world – with comic book shops promoting the anniversary of the arrival of the first Hellboy comic created by Mike Mignola.
Here in Ireland it’s been fun watching the excitement and buzz via Twitter on the hastag #Hellboy or #HellboyDay.
I’ve also created a Mignolaverse twitter list that contains most of the [...]

Sat, 08 March 2014 pancakes and beer

Last night I raised a glass of rosé in celebration of the release of the news that Kim and I are writing a Witchfinder comic book together.

When I saluted Hellboy with it he recoiled like he’d been offered the throne of England. ‘Son of a…!” he growled, and unholstered the Good Samaritan. [...]

It will be a five-issue Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder story called The Mysteries of Unland, with art by Tyler Crook, coloured by Dave Stewart, [...]
